What Happens If You Damage a Rental Exotic? Deposits & Insurance Explained

It's the question everyone asks before renting a supercar: what if something happens to it? The short answer — you're covered by a combination of a refundable deposit and insurance(yours or ours), and minor wear is normal and expected. Here's exactly how it works so you can rent with confidence.

The refundable deposit

Every exotic rental holds a refundable security deposit (typically $2,500–$7,500 by car) as an authorizationon your credit card — it's not a charge. When you return the car in the same condition, it's released back to you, usually 48–72 hours later. The deposit exists to cover small stuff (a curbed wheel, a chip) quickly without a full claim; anything beyond it is where insurance comes in.

Your insurance vs. a damage waiver

You choose one of two paths at booking:

  • Your own policy: if you carry insurance that explicitly extends to high-value/exotic vehicles, it can cover damage — bring the declaration page. Note that most standard auto policies and credit-card rental coverage exclude exotics, so confirm before relying on it.
  • Our damage protection:add it at booking and you're covered without touching your personal policy, usually with a defined maximum out-of-pocket. This is the simplest route for most renters.

If something does happen

Stop, make sure everyone's safe, and call us right away — don't try to arrange repairs yourself. For anything involving another vehicle or injury, file a police report. We handle assessment and repair through the proper channels; your responsibility is limited to the deposit and/or your coverage's terms, not the full value of the car. Being upfront and prompt is always the smoothest path.

How to protect yourself (do this every time)

  • Do a walkaround at handoff and take your own photos/video of any existing marks — front, back, wheels, and interior.
  • Confirm the fuel and mileage so there are no surprises at return.
  • Drive within the terms — return on time, keep it on paved roads, and stay within the mileage cap.
  • Only the named renter drives. Letting an unlisted person drive can void coverage.

The bottom line

Damaging an exotic is rare, and the deposit-plus-insurance structure exists precisely so a bad moment doesn't become a financial catastrophe. Read the full requirements, and note that booking direct with a dedicated fleet means one clear set of terms rather than a different policy per host.
